McGivney. Membership is limited to practicing\u00a0Catholic\u00a0men. It is led by\u00a0Patrick E. Kelly, the order&#8217;s 14th Supreme Knight.<\/p>\n<p>The organization was founded on March 29, 1882, as a\u00a0mutual benefit society\u00a0for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States. In addition to providing an insurance system for its members, it has grown to support refugee relief,\u00a0Catholic education, local parishes and dioceses, and global Catholic social causes. The Knights of Columbus have\u00a0played an active role in politics ever since its formation and promote the\u00a0Catholic view on public policy issues\u00a0around the world.<\/p>\n<p>As of 2024, the Knights reported having over 2.1<span class=\"nowrap\">\u00a0<\/span>million members around the world. Women may participate in K of C through the\u00a0Columbiettes\u00a0and other female auxiliaries, and boys may join the\u00a0Columbian Squires. The Order comprises four different &#8220;degrees&#8221;, each one of which exemplifies one of the core principles of the order.
